I used to dread the shorter days of winter, but find that getting out for a walk in our nearby park (which is actually an ancient volcano!) and putting on twinkle lights in my living room has made this once dreary time for me quite cozy. I didn't know the original meaning of the word hygge...it seems just right. Cardamom tea? I am adding that to my winter rituals!

Sounds lovely, Kaarin! And yes this tea is still my favorite winter sipping tea after several years running. It’s from Republic of Tea. I hope you can find it! 🫖

Thank you for your article Miriam. The photos are lovely. I’d say you’ve missed your calling but you write beautifully. I guess you’re just multi talented.

I love winter. I’ve never heard of hygge. I’m not a huge user of social media. I’ve never watched tik-tok. I guess I’m a little old fashioned.

I love winter. I’m just so happy to be here in Prescott where there are four definite seasons. I’m reading books like crazy when I’m indoors and making soup. I love having a pot simmering on the stove. I love the outdoors and like you, love to bundle up for walks with the dogs. The couple of times we’ve had frost were lovely. I’m also enjoying the different birds that are visiting me now.

Well Happy New year and happy hygge!

Hi Denise. thank you! Well, hygge is a very old Nordic custom. It's very much imbued in the lifestyle and outlook on life in Scandinavia actually. That was discovered by everyone on the planet a few years ago and it made the rounds on the socials and media. Nothing new - but I guess it was to them lol! I don't use the socials either and have never been on Tik-tok which is perfectly fine with me! So, I'm with you. Sounds like you've got your Hygge on just fine!

“Drizzle and chatty ravens interrupt the peace now and then. “ Sounds like perfection💖

Yes - indeed. Those ravens often have quite a bit to say though!

We have very loud chatty crows, but I have a soft spot for ravens.🐦‍⬛

I do too. They are just so endearing - they are curious, so very devoted to each other, and of course all the great stories they tell about their adventures lol

I appreciated better understanding the concept of hygge Miriam--hadn't heard of it before. I do generally fight it while I am Chicago-based and look forward to warmer weather although it doesn't take much, 40's or 50's will do. I try to break it up with a trip each month of the worst weather--Dec/Jan/Feb.

However, I don't let it defeat me and adjust activity accordingly to be indoors or bunled up if the sidewalks are clear. Some things I do that I guess would fall under hygee is enjoy holding a warm cup of hot chocolate or flavored coffee, reading by my fireplace when it's snowing out and I did have a nice 6-mile nature walk in our snow-covered arboretum when it was 30 degrees one day.

I agree with you - 40’s is perfect for me (assuming it’s not windy), and my favorite time for hikes in the National Forest. And that winter walk in your arboretum sounds perfectly lovely in the snow… especially if followed by that hot cocoa and a book by the fire. Stay warm!

Thanks Miriam. Yes that Prescott National Forest is fantastic. Enjoy it!
