Dear Miriam, Thank you for sharing your simple ways of celebrating the return of light.
The phrase "understated elegance" resonates with me. I wonder if we haven't forgotten that a whisper can be more powerful than a shout.
Last night I finally put up the Christmas lights on the front porch. To reply in gladness to the twinkling lights up and down the street.
Then I hung the wreath. I had to figure out how since I've not made time to go to the storage locker where my Christmas things are stored.
That was really fun! I finally got to use the book on knots that was given to me maybe forty years ago. (My family likes to give me books about knots because I once broke both arms when a knot slipped. )
Part of the joy was figuring out how to rig the wreath. Another part was using the book on knots - after all these years!
And then there was the companionship: Sara, my dog, watched me with curiosity.
I was grateful that it wasn't too cold last night.
For me, every year is different.
After one has had many Christmases, they all become available at once.
Miriam... Thank you for reminding us of the beauty of simplicity. I, too, love the quietness of winter... especially after snowfall. I love your use of nature to enhance your home. I will incorporate that for our home. I so enjoy your sharing with us. You always brighten my day. Jan💕
Hi Jan! Thank you so much for telling me. You made my day. Unfortunately immediately after publishing that letter I got 5 unsubscribes - pretty disheartening 😆 Have a happy solstice tomorrow!!
Of course I also like recognizing other traditions at this time of year as well. I love Diwali and have worn saris to friends celebrations in the past. Holidays are special for everyone😊
Oh Miriam I love the vignettes of your Christmas home. It looks so cozy. I’d love to be able to bring greenery in from my garden. Let’s make greenery a goal for next year. I truly love Christmas and I honestly have never felt pressure from the commercial side of things. For me it’s about listening to my favorite carols sung by wonderful English choirs and other talented people. Kings college choir
is a favorite as well as The Medieval Babes. Check them out! I always say Merry Christmas. It’s tradition in the UK and even those from different traditions don’t take offense. Well Merry Christmas everyone!

No pressure. Just what is beautiful and true.

Hi Melissa! Well what a perfectly lovely note :) And such a sweet moment in your day to share. Thank you. I love this.
You did reply! Thank you!
I’ve just not been on Substack all this time! I’m turning over a new leaf!
Oh good! I'm glad I didn't completely space out :) I just really enjoyed your note and little story! Happy New Year and here's to 'new leaves'.
This line stayed with me: “It asks me to be discerning.”
I do the same — occasionally a little overzealously — and am still learning the balance.
It’s all about balance. Moderation. That’s the secret sauce!

A lovely reminder that slowing down in every way might become a new tradition for you. To look forward to.
Beautiful. And totally agree with it all! God Jul :)
